My car has a symptom where the starter, when engaged, will grind at high speed and will not engage the flywheel. After rattling the shifter into and out of gear, the starter will engage and start the car as normal. The car is an NA-TT swapped 2+0. The car has an OS Giken TS2CD clutch & flywheel made for the TT engine, and the flywheel does have some worn/gouged teeth, but nothing too crazy. When the starter engages normally, there doesn't appear to be any abnormal noise that would indicate severely deformed or missing teeth. I believe the shim for the starter is the correct thickness, and the occurrence of the starter grind is unpredictable. I'm wondering if the starter grind is an indication of a failing starter, or whether I should expect to replace the flywheel the next time the trans is dropped. I searched the forum and could not find a definitive answer on this. Hopefully I can just replace the starter and solve the problem!
